Hate Crimes Bill ... write your senators to stop this bill

H. R. 1913 Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009

Of course it always seems a good idea to protect people from the hate that surfaces in people who have no self-control or self-discipline, but this bill could end up protecting the wrong people. How? Well, according to the bill if you harm someone based on sexual orientation you have committed a felony. Sounds good, yes? Well imagine you are minding your own business and you see a fellow looking through your neighbors window. He's watching the young woman next door get undressed. You go over and end up in a scuffle with him. Now, he has committed a misdemeanor, while YOU have committed a felony.

This bill will end up protecting sexual deviants, perverts, pedophiles. This is NOT the way we solve the kinds of crimes the leave a young Matthew Shepherd hanging on a fence in the middle of nowhere.

Which brings me to another question. Why do we call it a hate crime just because it has been perpetrated on someone based on a particular trait? There are already laws that make what happened to Matthew Shepherd illegal. I have asked this before many times, would it have been any less hateful if they had done the same thing to a straight young man, or a young woman? Why should these crimes be treated differently because the person who has been viciously attacked is "different" in some way?

No one deserves to be beaten and hung on a fence and left to die. It is hateful no matter who it was done to. It is not necessary to write special bills or pass special laws to protect some more than others. The laws that are passed in our country should be written to protect all her citizens, not a select group. We are better than that.

You can read the text of the bill and track it's progress here.

There is a group who are making it easier to send a letter from you to all 100 senators. They charge 10.95, but they send your letter Fed Ex to each senator. If your interested please click here.

You could also do it yourself, for the addresses to all the senators please click here.
